SULFUR CLEANSER

The First Step

The What:
This is an ultra mild cleanser with more than a decade of use in clinics and skincare studios. The use of sulfur, a brightly yellow crystalline mineral, nearly odorless in the fragrance-free formula 302 Skincare provides is demonstrably beneficial in reducing the appearance of breakouts. About 95% of acne is inflammatory and when sulfur is properly incorporated the rate of clearing is excellent.

The Why:
Sulfur has been applied to skin since antiquity. Quoting from Wikipedia: elemental sulfur (has been) used mainly in creams to alleviate such conditions as scabies, ringworm, psoriasis, eczema, and acne. The mechanism in play is not understood but given the chemical structure it likely is a simple disruption of bacterial cells. It also imparts a proton donor like effect that is highly skin compatible. Formulated as a cleanser we have found provides much better results than a complicated emulsion as found in a lotion or cream that can generate sulfur acid compounds.

The How:
Use SULFUR CLEANSER as a first step in addressing breakouts. 302 Skincare advocates the use of several compatible cleansers for those with unstable skin. Set aside leave-on products. Unstable skin can become easily even more unstable by continuous application of the same product. We recommend that you include our extraordinary REVIVE and also our skin softening FACE & BODY BAR with SULFUR CLEANSER to be rotated through during the week, once per day. This variety of cleansers and an avoidance of leave-on products will go a very long way to gain a clear, vibrant skin whether you are on the oily or dry side.

Note: we also highly recommend against incorporating benzoyl peroxide and exfoliating acids in your normal routine.

Background:
With only eight ingredients in SULFUR CLEANSER, unexpected side effects are minimized and the focus is to let the sulfur do its job. In this cleanser category, there are many different product concentrations of sulfur available in the marketplace. They can range from over 10% to less than 1%. The original FDA monograph of clinical applications of sulfur found that 3% concentration was optimum to address breakouts and 302 Skincare follows that observation in its formula. However, co-ingredients can often interfere with desired results which was a little noticed factor in clinical studies. Surfactant choice it turns out is critical. Typical anionic detergents can in themselves create inflammation that when combined with sulfur causes a visible and undesirable reaction. The sugar beet derived surfactant used by 302 Skincare in SULFUR CLEANSER is mild enough to be used at 100% concentration.

Special Needs:
The use of SULFUR CLEANSER alone to address rosacea will be of limited utility. Refer back to the “The How” paragraph for our suggestions of multiple cleansers. Also, as with breakouts, we cannot recommend the use of leave-ons (such as moisturizers and serums) applied to rosacea or unstable, irritated skin.

We are known by clinicians for our client by client, situation by situation approach. The practical personal guidance and unique product formulations we provide today arise from decades of experience with the underlying clinical biochemistry in many thousands of cases. Make this work for you.
