Introduction to Scar Remediation
Visible scar remediation hinges on the time it takes for the skin to remodel within normal metabolic rates – you cannot accelerate this – generally about once every month the skin will replace the top layers of cells – these arise down inside the skin and work their way up and out over the course of a month. It takes several months to get noticeable change, though you will notice significant activity within first few weeks. Skin softening is first. Over time the visuals get better and better.
The skin is about 18-20 sheets of paper thick. The uneven texture or ‘gristle’ of a scar is a result of the skin defenses that put up protein sand bags to protect the vital organs or over-produce skin cells and cell fragments from variations in hormonal activity. This is often the case, too, where some sort of inflammation (like breakouts) is in play. This ‘sand bagging’ is done in hurry and the resulting protein sand bags are disorganized, that is, look and feel like scar tissue.
If the breakouts are chronic, the skin will leave this messy defense in place. After a while, the skin ignores the area and so the scar tissue, the sand bags, remain. In some cases this gradually subsides – as we age we lose huge volumes of cells permanently (this is natural). So, the volume of scar tissue also depletes, but only up to a limit and not as much as our coherent skin tissue. In other words, we can’t outlive the scar.
The first step in scar elimination is skin softening. The sand bags are in a dynamic state and will unwind with proper signaling between cells. Signaling is key and this occurs in the extra cellular matrix which is composed of many key factors and all of it surrounded by a gel of hyaluronic acid.
You cannot add hyaluronic acid to your skin and resolve scars. It will have no positive effect and may in fact aggravate the scar and form more protein fragments. Hyaluronic acid applied topically is cumulatively inflammatory and should be applied only 2x per week.
It is vitally important in scar reversion to avoid inflammation caused by topical agents. Orally dosed medications may also cause a side effect of skin inflammation and this, too, will inhibit scar reversion. If you are unsure, reach out to GUIDANCE.
As cell signaling renormalizes, the sand bags will be withdrawn and replaced by normal cells. The excess cross-linking will unwind. This process takes time. Skin is quick to go wrong and slow to re-normalize. This can be frustrating to wait for months but realize that it is a process much like growing plants. Over the course of months and years the restoration is often dramatic. Conditions must remain optimum and that means strict control of topical product applications. Pay attention to the instructions. KEY PRODUCTS:
• 302 DROPS
• RETINOL 0.5 DROPS or RETINOL 1.0 DROPS
RETINOL 0.5 DROPS – moderate retinol concentration for more sensitive skin
RETINOL 1.0 DROPS – higher retinol concentration for optimal effect
Set aside all other products – sunscreens, moisturizers, serums, lotions, makeup, cleansers and begin your transition to skin free of skincare product effects. We want a clean slate. This will take a few weeks of cleansing only.
Often times allergies, oral medications, chronic inflammation, and other factors need special attention before scar issues can be addressed satisfactorily. Reach out to us at GUIDANCE if you have skin issues or would like further clarification.
Begin with two cleansers. We recommend ARRIVE and PURITY for most. Use one of these 1x per day, alternate days. You may also use these unique cleansers as leave-ons. See the individual product pages for more information. Apply no other products.
After 10-14 days, introduce RETINOL DROPS. Apply 2x per week, evenings. Use ARRIVE to spread more evenly.
Apply nothing else during the day. Exception: ARRIVE may be used as an anytime leave-on.
Do this for 1 month. Then set RETINOL DROPS aside.
Introduce 302 DROPS. Apply 2x – 3x per week for one month. Use ARRIVE to spread more evenly. 3x per week is recommended if minimal acne is present.
Introduce a third cleanser – see CLEANSERS to choose, do this any time after you begin 302. Different cleanser, different day. If breakouts are in play consult GUIDANCE for specific recommendations.
After 1 month of applying 302 DROPS, set aside and return to RETINOL DROPS – 2x per week. Maintain cleansing routine of alternating cleansers.
Continue to alternate months between these two key products.
ARRIVE is your go-to cleanser/moisturizer. PURITY along with another 302 brand cleanser either recommended or that you prefer will give you three cleansers to rotate through during the week which will ensure a low probability of inflammation. ARRIVE will provide you the best balance overall and could be your 3x or even 4x per week cleanser.
If you experience problems, contact us at GUIDANCE.
The process of scar reversion is biologically slow because the skin is slow to improve and a rabbit to go wrong. The 302 molecule and retinol will exert control over this dynamic and the result will be worth the time. When you need assistance, reach out. Don’t wait.
