Benzoyl Peroxide
The Devil Himself
This is the most potent and dangerous free radical generating ingredient in skincare. You risk permanent scarring that cannot be corrected by any method or means. You risk a heavy, leathery textured skin morphology that cannot be reversed. You risk bizarre lesion formations that will continue on any part of your face regardless of where you applied the BP for up to a year after discontinuing. The lesions can result in scar areas that resist reversal.
Dotting your comedones (zits) with benzoyl peroxide or using it to overcome an intractable acne is to be undertaken with full knowledge of the permanent injury it may cause. Benzoyl peroxide weakens the skin rapidly and is very addictive topically. When used in combination with exfoliating acids the results can be irreversibly disfiguring.
Avoid this ingredient or any skincare practitioner who advises its use beyond a few applications.
The Skin Dork cannot imagine the circumstances that justify the continuing use of this unforgiving free radical generator. It almost always is employed when skin is very weak and continuously breaking out from other topical product abuse. Failure in skincare begets more failure.
Probably not a good idea, you would say?
If you currently use benzoyl peroxide based products and believe it is in your interest to discontinue them, and have been using the products for a month or longer, then your withdrawal should be gradual in order to avoid a very debilitating skin ordeal. The chemical rapidly brings on dependency. The addiction withdrawal from this chemical is unpleasant and unsightly.
No doubt there are many happy benzoyl peroxide addicts out there. The Skin Dork can only offer this: best of luck to your skin in the future, short as it will be.
